Kick Like a Girl is the first and only dedicated AFLW only radio program hosted by award-winning journalist Kate O’Halloran.

The show focuses not just on the action on-field but the politics off it, and in 2020 is supported by a larger team including Kirby Fenwick, Emily Fox, Jacinta Masters, Kasey Symons and Amelie Lonsdale.

In 2019, Kick Like a Girl was nominated for Excellence in Sports Programming at the Community Broadcasting Association Awards (CBAA). The show also formed part of host Kate O’Halloran’s successful entry for the 2019 VicHealth award for Outstanding reporting of women’s sport.

Meet the Kick Like a Girl Team

Kate O’Halloran

Host

Kate O’Halloran is an award-winning journalist, editor and academic researcher. She has a PhD in Gender and Cultural Studies and is passionate about gender equity and social justice, particularly in sport. In 2019 she won the VicHealth Outstanding Reporting of Women’s Sport award for Kick Like A Girl and her ABC columns covering the most recent AFLW season. In 2019 she was also short-listed for a Quill Award for Excellence in coverage of Women in Sport and was Highly Commended for the same VicHealth award in 2018. Kick Like a Girl was also shortlisted for the 2019 Excellence in Sports Programming at the Community Broadcast Association of Australia Awards. Kate is the former deputy sports editor at Guardian Australia, an active freelancer for the ABC and The Saturday Paper, and a founding member of Siren: A Women in Sport Collective.

Kirby Fenwick

Voices from the Stands

Kirby Fenwick is a fan first and an award-winning writer and audio producer second. She is part of Siren: A Women in Sport Collective and has written for The Guardian, Eureka Street and Melbourne City of Literature among others. Her audio documentary, The First Friday in February, which tells the story of the first AFLW game, won the 2018 Oral History Victoria Award. She produces the regular segment Voices from the Stands and is a diehard Bulldog.

Emily Fox

Co-hosting, Player Interviews

Emily Fox is an actor, athlete and activist, and as a trans woman takes great pleasure in making cis het men feel weird about themselves. She is a player, coach and committee member with the St Kilda Sharks Women’s Football Club and also serves as an ambassador with Pride Cup Australia. Emily has written for The Guardian, featured in the Herald Sun and The Age, has been heard on 3AW Drive, ABC RN, and Chicks Talking Footy on JoyFM, and can be seen in Get Krack!n on ABC TV. Emily is currently a co-host of Kick Like a Girl on RRR Radio Melbourne.

Jacinta Masters

Creative and Technical Producer and Communications Manager

Jacinta is a gender equity advocate who manages Gender Equity Victoria, the peak body for gender equity, women’s health and the prevention of violence against women. Jacinta is also studying a Juris Doctor (law degree) and is a musician (drums, vocals, bass, synth). Jacinta is passionate about equality for women playing footy and provides a high degree of creative and technical support to Kick Like a Girl, including the development and management of the Kick Like a Girl website and brand, show structure and segment design, audio editing, and all promotional material and communications. She has a strong focus on addressing online abuse and harassment of women, particularly women journalists, which she developed and oversees a world first project to enhance the online safety of women.

Kasey Symons

Co-hosting, Player Interviews

Kasey Symons is an academic and writer. Her research work includes sport fan culture, representations of women in sport literature and evaluating the social impact of sport through working with industry. Kasey is part of the recently launched platform Siren: A Women in Sport Collective and has written on sport for The Guardian, The Footy Almanac, The Women’s Game and has appeared on ABC News Radio, ABC News TV, 3AW, Chicks Talking Footy and is a regular contributor to Kick Like Girl. Kasey is also a director of the Fitzroy Football Club.

Amélie Lonsdale

Technical Producer

Amélie Lonsdale is a volunteer technical producer for Kick Like a Girl. She is the former Queer Issues Editor for the newspaper Semper Floreat at the University of Queensland, where she studied writing and journalism. She is currently looking for a real job in between her volunteer duties.
